As previously advised the Australian Aged Care Quality Agency (the Agency) has introduced the SOFI tool which will be used during all accreditations going forward. We have been advised that generally the assessors will observe interactions in an area for up to 30 minutes at a time with the opportunity to expand this time frame if required.
The Agency has advised that observation has always been an important element of the assessors’ toolkit as they endeavour to better understand the resident’s experience, through observation.
The SOFI (Short Observational Framework for Inspection) was developed in 2006 by the United Kingdom Care Quality Commission and the Bradford Dementia Group of the University of Bradford. It was revised in 2011 and released as SOFI 2 and applied to the Australian context.
The Agency includes information about the SOFI in the March edition of The Standard. Further information on SOFI 2 is available from the University of Bradford website
