Procedural pain stress impact on pre term infants!

Infants born preterm, ‘especially those born between 24 and 32 wk gestational age (very preterm) are exposed to repeated procedural pain-related stress, during a period of physiological vulnerability and rapid brain development, as part of their lifesaving care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).’ The enclosed  article published in the Paediatric Research Journal (May 2014) discusses the impact of pain on pre term infants and the management of same taking into account pharmacological and environmental support strategies and the associated impact on brain development.
