Revised Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Registration Standard

CPD  Continuing Professional Development   changes!  The revised Continuing Professional Development ( CPD) Registration Standards come into effect from 1st June 2016. So what does it mean for Nurses in Australia?

Well if you are an Enrolled Nurse, a Registered Nurse or Midwife  the revised standard applies to you!  Note: The standard applies equally  to the Nurses registered with AHPRA who work full time, part-time in paid OR unpaid work. Here are some key points for your information.

  • Each Nurse must complete a minimum of 20 hours of CPD per registration
  • If you have been registered less than 12months, pro rata CPD hours apply
  • If your CPD activities are relevant to both the nursing profession and the midwifery profession  you may count those activities as evidence for both nursing and midwifery CPD hours
  • You   should maintain  records of  your  CPD activity for 5 years in case you are audited

Registered Nurse or  Enrolled Nurse 20 hours 20 hrs
Registered Nurse with scheduled medicines endorsement Registered Nurse 20 hours

+

Scheduled medicines endorsement, 10 additional hours relating to obtaining, supplying and administration of scheduled medicines

                     30 hrs
Midwife 20 hours 20 hrs
Midwife with a notation and/or scheduled medicines endorsement Midwife   20hours

+

Endorsement and /or notation 10 additional hours relating to the context of practice, prescribing and administration of medicines, diagnostic investigations, consultation and referral

                      30 hrs
Nurse Practitioner Registered Nurse 20 hours

+

Nurse practitioner endorsement, 10 additional hours relating to prescribing and administration of medicines, diagnostic investigations, consultation and referral

                       30 hrs
Registered as both an Enrolled Nurse or a Registered Nurse and a Midwife Complete the amount required for both Nursing and Midwifery

e.g. Registered Nurse or Enrolled Nurse – 20 hrs

Midwife – 20 hours

Note: If your CPD is relevant to both the Nursing and Midwifery profession, you may count those activities as evidence for both Nursing and Midwifery CPD hours

Note: of you have scheduled medicines endorsement there is an additional 10  CPD hours

 

If you have been registered less than 12months, pro rata CPD hours apply.

>6-9 months ≥ 15hrs
>9-12 months ≥ 20 hrs

If you are registered and have an endorsement and/or notation for a period of less than 12 months prior to the renewal of registration, the following pro rata  CPD requirements apply!
